Your Summer Reading List

It seems that about this time each year, magazines and websites release their “summer reading lists.”  Those lists of all the hot books that everyone will be talking about as the sun comes out and the temperatures rise. And no matter if you’ll be going on vacation or just enjoying a quiet afternoon on your balcony, a book is never a bad idea.

Take a look at these books and see which ones you might want to read this summer!

  • Notes on an Execution: A Novel by Danya Kukafka
    • Ansel Packer is scheduled to die in twelve hours. He knows what he’s done, and now awaits execution, the same chilling fate he forced on those girls, years ago. But Ansel doesn’t want to die; he wants to be celebrated, understood.
    • Through a kaleidoscope of women—a mother, a sister, a homicide detective—we learn the story of Ansel’s life. We meet his mother, Lavender, a seventeen-year-old girl pushed to desperation; Hazel, twin sister to Ansel’s wife, inseparable since birth, forced to watch helplessly as her sister’s relationship threatens to devour them all; and finally, Saffy, the detective hot on his trail, who has devoted herself to bringing bad men to justice but struggles to see her own life clearly. As the clock ticks down, these three women sift through the choices that culminate in tragedy, exploring the rippling fissures that such destruction inevitably leaves in its wake.
    • Blending breathtaking suspense with astonishing empathy, Notes on an Execution presents a chilling portrait of womanhood as it simultaneously unravels the familiar narrative of the American serial killer, interrogating our system of justice and our cultural obsession with crime stories, asking readers to consider the false promise of looking for meaning in the psyches of violent men.
  • Lost & Found: A Memoir by Kathryn Schulz
    • Eighteen months before Kathryn Schulz’s beloved father died, she met the woman she would marry. In Lost & Found, she weaves the stories of those relationships into a brilliant exploration of how all our lives are shaped by loss and discovery—from the maddening disappearance of everyday objects to the sweeping devastations of war, pandemic, and natural disaster; from finding new planets to falling in love.
    • Three very different American families form the heart of Lost & Found: the one that made Schulz’s father, a charming, brilliant, absentminded Jewish refugee; the one that made her partner, an equally brilliant farmer’s daughter and devout Christian; and the one she herself makes through marriage. But Schulz is also attentive to other, more universal kinds of conjunction: how private happiness can coexist with global catastrophe, how we get irritated with those we adore, how love and loss are themselves unavoidably inseparable. The resulting book is part memoir, part guidebook to living in a world that is simultaneously full of wonder and joy and wretchedness and suffering—a world that always demands both our gratitude and our grief.
    • A staff writer at The New Yorker and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Kathryn Schulz writes with curiosity, tenderness, erudition, and wit about our finite yet infinitely complicated lives. Crafted with the emotional clarity of C. S. Lewis and the intellectual force of Susan Sontag, Lost & Found is an uncommon book about common experiences.
  • Fiona and Jane by Jean Chen Ho
    • Best friends since second grade, Fiona Lin and Jane Shen explore the lonely freeways and seedy bars of Los Angeles together through their teenage years, surviving unfulfilling romantic encounters, and carrying with them the scars of their families’ tumultuous pasts. Fiona was always destined to leave, her effortless beauty burnished by fierce ambition—qualities that Jane admired and feared in equal measure. When Fiona moves to New York and cares for a sick friend through a breakup with an opportunistic boyfriend, Jane remains in California and grieves her estranged father’s sudden death, in the process alienating an overzealous girlfriend. Strained by distance and unintended betrayals, the women float in and out of each other’s lives, their friendship both a beacon of home and a reminder of all they’ve lost.
    • In stories told in alternating voices, Jean Chen Ho’s debut collection peels back the layers of female friendship—the intensity, resentment, and boundless love—to probe the beating hearts of young women coming to terms with themselves, and each other, in light of the insecurities and shame that holds them back.
    • Spanning countries and selves, Fiona and Jane is an intimate portrait of a friendship, a deep dive into the universal perplexities of being young and alive, and a bracingly honest account of two Asian women who dare to stake a claim on joy in a changing, contemporary America.
  • The School for Good Mothers: A Novel by Jessamine Chan
    • Frida Liu is struggling. She doesn’t have a career worthy of her Chinese immigrant parents’ sacrifices. She can’t persuade her husband, Gust, to give up his wellness-obsessed younger mistress. Only with Harriet, their cherubic daughter, does Frida finally attain the perfection expected of her. Harriet may be all she has, but she is just enough.
    • Until Frida has a very bad day.
    • The state has its eyes on mothers like Frida. The ones who check their phones, letting their children get injured on the playground; who let their children walk home alone. Because of one moment of poor judgment, a host of government officials will now determine if Frida is a candidate for a Big Brother-like institution that measures the success or failure of a mother’s devotion.
    • Faced with the possibility of losing Harriet, Frida must prove that a bad mother can be redeemed. That she can learn to be good.
    • A searing page-turner that is also a transgressive novel of ideas about the perils of “perfect” upper-middle class parenting; the violence enacted upon women by both the state and, at times, one another; the systems that separate families; and the boundlessness of love, The School for Good Mothers introduces, in Frida, an everywoman for the ages. Using dark wit to explore the pains and joys of the deepest ties that bind us, Chan has written a modern literary classic.

If the number of books you want to read just keeps growing, then you might want to add these four to your list! They are sure to be popular reads this summer!

Memorial Day BBQ Favorites

It won’t be long now before it’s time to start planning those Memorial Day barbecues! After all, Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to summer – and a barbecue is the perfect way to get the season started. And no matter if you’re hosting the bbq this year or attending one with friends or family, then you’ll want some great recipes. After all, the food should be the star of the show! Check out these recipes and consider making one (or two) for your Memorial Day get-together.

  • Jalapeno Popper Mac and Cheese: Who doesn’t love rich and creamy mac and cheese? With numerous cheeses and loads of flavor – it’s a favorite with just about everyone! This recipe takes it a step further and kicks it up a notch by adding bacon and chopped jalapenos! Yum!
  • Grilled Chicken Wings with Seasoned Buffalo Sauce: No fryer is needed when you try this wing recipe! They’ll soak up all that delicious flavor that grilling gives foods, and then you’ll toss them in a Buffalo sauce to finish them off. Grab the carrots and celery and some blue cheese or ranch dressing, and everyone will be smiling!
  • Vinegar-Based Coleslaw: If you’re not a fan of mayo-based coleslaw, then check this out! It uses vinegar as the base – which makes it really tangy! Lots of vegetables make it super healthy, and it’s a great accompaniment to pulled pork or barbecue ribs. (And while you are probably not having fish tacos for Memorial Day – it’s excellent for those, too!)
  • Lemon Orzo Pasta Salad with Cucumbers and Olives: Have you seen that pasta that looks like small grains of rice? That’s orzo – and it’s delicious! This salad uses orzo as its pasta (although you could easily sub in whatever you have on hand) and then adds cucumbers, olives, artichokes, tomatoes, and fresh herbs – which really brighten it up! And yes, you’ll make your own vinaigrette to dress it with! So good!
  • Classic Potato Salad: If your friends and family are fond of the classics, then this Classic Potato Salad will not disappoint. It’s full of the quintessential potato salad ingredients that people love and has a delicious dressing. Be sure to use Yukon gold potatoes for this recipe – as they’re not as starchy and better suited for this cold salad than russet potatoes.
  • Calico Beans: This is a hearty side dish that will go with just about any protein you’re serving on Memorial Day! And it’s super easy to make! Everyone will want this recipe!
  • Mexican 7 Layer Dip: If you need an appetizer or snack while the main course is being prepared, this one is always popular! The seven layers are refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, shredded cheese, tomatoes, sliced black olives, and green onions – and you can serve it with your favorite tortilla chips or Fritos.
  • Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies: Chocolate chip cookies are always popular – especially if you’ve got kids attending the get-together. This recipe by Alton Brown is fantastic! His recipe calls for bread flour – which provides the chewiness – and more brown sugar than a traditional chocolate chip recipe. Give it a try!
  • Blueberry Yogurt Swirl Popsicles: If it looks like it’s going to be warm on Memorial Day, consider making some homemade popsicles to cool everyone off. These Blueberry Yogurt Swirl Popsicles are so refreshing – and with just three ingredients, they can’t get any easier to make. (This is a great project to get the kids involved in!)

Memorial Day will be here before you know it – so start planning that barbecue now! Gather your friends and family together and cook up some great dishes for everyone to enjoy with these recipes.

How to Shop Your Local Farmers’ Market

The farmers’ market is a great place to get fresh produce, meat, and dairy products. However, it can be tricky to know how to shop there in order to get the best deals. If you’re ready to hit your local farmers’ market, here are some tips and tricks for shopping like a pro!

  • Shop What’s In Season: One of the best ways to get a good deal at the farmers’ market is to shop what’s in season. Seasonal produce is typically cheaper than out-of-season produce because it doesn’t have to be transported as far. (And yes, you will occasionally find vendors at your local farmers’ market who bring in produce that is not locally produced.) So, before you go to the farmers’ market, do some research on what’s in season in your area. That way, you’ll know which fruits and vegetables to focus on when you’re shopping.
  • Walk Around Before Buying: Another great way to get a good deal at the farmers’ market is to walk around before you buy anything. This allows you to compare prices between different vendors, and it also gives you a chance to see what’s available. If there’s something that you’re interested in buying, ask the vendor how much they charge for it. Often, they’ll give you a discount if you buy more than one item.
  • Get To Know The Vendors: It’s always recommended that you get to know your vendors. Many of them will give you discounts if you buy in bulk or if you purchase multiple items from their stand. Additionally, it’s helpful to know what items they will be bringing in future weeks and what they recommend at the moment.
  • Bring A Bag: When you go to the farmers’ market, always bring a bag! That way, you’ll be able to carry all of your purchases home with ease. While some vendors will have plastic bags available, bringing your own is always preferred – and you may even find that your local farmers’ market sells reusable tote bags to support the operations.
  • Plan Your Meals Before You Go: Before you go to the farmers’ market, take some time to plan out your meals for the week. That way, you’ll know exactly what ingredients you need and won’t end up buying things that you don’t need. This will help you stay within your budget and avoid wasting money on produce that will go bad before you can use it.
  • But Remain Flexible Based On What’s Available: While it’s a good idea to have a plan, don’t be too rigid. If you see something at the farmers’ market that you want but didn’t include in your meal plan, go ahead and buy it – after all, variety is the spice of life! Just make sure that you’re mindful of your budget and only buy things that you’ll actually use.
  • Carry Cash: Most farmers’ markets only accept cash payments. So, make sure you bring enough cash with you to buy everything that you need. (And small denominations and coins are preferred.)
  • Go Early or Go Late: The farmers’ market is typically busiest in the middle of the day. So, if you want to get good deals on produce, go early or go late. That way, you’ll have more time to chat with the vendors and explore all of their stands.
  • Take Your Time: Lastly, remember that the farmers’ market is a place to relax and take your time. So, don’t rush through your shopping trip – enjoy looking at all of the different products available.

Shopping at your local farmers’ market is a great way to support your community – and when you use these tips, you’ll get to know the vendors and find yourself bringing home some delicious items!

Spring Cleaning Tips: How to Spring Clean Your Apartment

The days are getting warmer, and the flowers are blooming – it can only mean one thing: spring is here! And with spring comes the time for a good old-fashioned spring cleaning.

If you’re like most people, you may be wondering where to start. Never fear, here are some tips on how to spring clean your apartment from top to bottom. So put on your cleaning gloves and get ready to tackle that dirt and grime!

  • Gather Your Supplies: In order to make the cleaning process a bit easier, it’s helpful to gather your supplies beforehand. This includes a vacuum cleaner, broom, mop, rags, cleaners (dish soap, window cleaner, all-purpose cleaner), and buckets.
  • Declutter and Purge: Before you even start cleaning, take a look around and see what you can get rid of. Decluttering and purging things you’re no longer using or that are broken is a great spring activity.
  • Make a List: The first thing you should do is take a look at your apartment and make a list of the things that need to be cleaned. This may include windows, blinds, curtains, walls, floors, ceilings, appliances, furniture, carpets, and rugs. Once you have a list made, it’s time to get started!
  • Window Cleaning: Start by cleaning your windows and window frames with a mild detergent and water. Be sure to remove any streaks or dirt build-up. If you have hard water stains, you can use vinegar or lemon juice to help remove them.
  • Curtains: Give your curtains and blinds a good cleaning by vacuuming them thoroughly. If they’re really dirty, you can soak them in a bathtub of hot water and detergent.
  • Walls: Walls can get dirty over time, especially if you have smokers or pets in your home. To clean them, use a mixture of warm water and dish soap. Be sure to scrub away any dirt or grime that may be built up.
  • Floors: Sweep and mop your floors regularly to keep them clean. If they’re really dirty, you can use a mixture of vinegar and water to help remove the dirt and stains.
  • Ceilings: Dust your ceilings regularly to prevent dirt from building up. You can use a duster or a vacuum with the brush attachment.
  • Appliances: Clean all of your appliances inside and out with a mild detergent and water. Be sure to scrub away any dirt or grease build-up.
  • Furniture: Vacuum all of your furniture thoroughly, including the cushions.
  • Carpets and Rugs: Vacuum your carpets and rugs regularly to keep them clean. If they’re really in bad shape, you can have them professionally cleaned.
  • Launder Your Bedding: When was the last time you laundered all of your bedding – not just the sheets? Spring is the perfect time to do this!
  • Air It Out: Once you’ve finished cleaning, give your apartment a good airing out to get rid of any lingering smells.
  • Don’t Do Everything at Once: It’s important to note that you don’t have to do everything at once. You can break up the cleaning into several sessions, so it’s not too overwhelming. And be sure to take breaks in between each session – especially if you’re enlisting your family to help.
  • Create a Cleaning Schedule: If you want to keep your spring cleaning momentum going throughout the year, it can be helpful to create a cleaning schedule. This way you’ll know what needs to be done each day/week, and you won’t feel overwhelmed.

Are you ready to get your apartment clean and fresh for spring? Then grab those cleaning supplies and get started! Happy cleaning!

How to Find a New Job

Finding a new job or career can be tough, but there are some tried and true strategies that will help you find your next opportunity. Here are some of the best ways to search for jobs, how to make yourself more marketable in today’s marketplace, and what steps to take when you land an interview.

Job Search Tips:

  • Start by doing your research. Figure out what companies or industries you want to work in, and target your job search accordingly.
  • Use a variety of resources when looking for jobs, including job boards, company websites, networking events, and LinkedIn.
  • Make your resume stand out by highlighting your skills and experience. Be sure to tailor it to the specific position you’re applying for.
  • Prepare for interviews by practicing common questions and dressing for success. Stay positive and confident throughout the process.

Making Yourself Marketable:

  • Update your skillset regularly so that you’re always learning new things. Technology changes rapidly, so make sure you’re keeping up with the latest trends.
  • Be proactive! Use your network to find out about job opportunities before they’re posted.
  • Start a personal website or blog, join professional associations in your industry, and participate on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. These are great ways to make yourself visible within the community.
  • Attend career fairs, conferences, networking events – anything that will help you meet people who work at places you’d be interested in working for. You never know where it might lead!

Interview Tips:

  • Prepare answers to common interview questions ahead of time so that you aren’t caught off guard when you get asked something specific during an interview. Here are some common questions you may be asked:
    • Tell me about yourself
    • What are your strengths?
    • What are your weaknesses?
    • Why are you interested in this position?
    • Where do you see yourself in five years?
    • Can you give me an example of a time when you worked on a team?
    • What are your salary requirements?
    • Do you have any questions for me?
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early for every interview. Being late for an interview is a big no-no and will not start you off on the right foot.
  • Dress the part. An unprofessional appearance can leave a poor impression, so make sure you dress appropriately. Do your research on the company and what is appropriate attire. For men, this might mean nice slacks and a button-up shirt or khakis and a polo. Women might opt to wear formal business attire or something more casual like pants and a blouse with heels. Additionally, make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle-free.

After the Interview:

  • Writing a thank you note is always a good idea. If you interviewed with multiple people, you want to make sure you write to every person you encountered during your interview. Nowadays, you can do this with a handwritten note or an email. (If you want to stand out – handwritten may be the way to go!)
  • Be sure to follow up if you need to. If it’s past the time when you expected to hear about being hired for the position, drop an email to check on the status – especially if it’s a job you want.

There’s no surefire way to find the perfect job, but it can be done if you stay positive and remain patient. Take every opportunity that comes your way and spend time preparing. Your hard work is bound to pay off with a job that is right for you!

How to Eat Healthy: Tips and Tricks to Help

Eating healthy can be tough. It is easy to get caught up in the temptations of unhealthy food at every turn, and it’s even easier to give in when you are hungry or tired. To make sure that you are not sabotaging your efforts by eating unhealthy food, here are some tips and tricks for eating a healthier diet.

  • Eat breakfast daily: If you do not eat breakfast, then you will likely overeat later because your body goes into starvation mode where it tries to store fat instead of burning it off. You should aim to eat within one hour of waking up so that your metabolism does not slow down while sleeping. This also gives you the energy that you need to feel good throughout the day.
  • Pack your own food: One of the best ways to eat healthily is by packing your own snacks and meals. This way, when hunger strikes or temptation comes knocking at your door, you will be able to resist it because there are healthier options available in your bag already. You can make sandwiches ahead for lunch and pack some fruit with peanut butter for snack time.
  • Eat a balanced diet: By eating a variety of foods, you will be much more likely to get all the nutrients that your body needs. Make sure that you are looking out for food groups such as proteins and carbs, but also do not forget about adding in fruits and vegetables.
  • Cook your own meals: If you cook your own food, then you know exactly what is going into it. You can control the ingredients and adjust them to fit what your body needs without worrying about any added chemicals or preservatives, or excess fats.
  • Eat mindfully: It is easy to get absorbed by work or other activities while eating dinner – which might cause you to eat too quickly and overeat before realizing it. Try stopping halfway through a meal so that your digestive system has time to tell your brain when it’s full – this way, you will be able not only to stop yourself from overindulging but also keep yourself from feeling hungry later on.
  • Ditch the diet mentality: Being healthy does not have to be about depriving yourself of everything that you enjoy. It is perfectly okay to indulge in a treat every once in a while – as long as it fits into your daily calorie intake and lifestyle habits. If you are constantly thinking about what is “allowed” or “not allowed,” then you will find yourself struggling with cravings more often than not–and these cravings can lead to some serious binging.
  • Eat smaller portions: You don’t need whole pizzas, extra-large candy bars, or huge servings of chips. By eating small portions, you will consume fewer calories overall and not feel deprived of your favorites.
  • Eat more whole grains: You should be consuming at least half of your daily diet in the form of complex carbs like whole grains because they give you energy without spiking blood sugar levels too fast or causing a crash later on down the road. These types of carbohydrates also help to control weight loss by preventing overeating while giving you long-term energy.
  • Eat more fiber: Fiber is essential because it helps you to feel full longer. It also regulates your digestive system by flushing out toxins and excess cholesterol that might be building up in the body over time (which can lead to serious health issues like heart disease, obesity, or diabetes).

If your goal is to eat a more balanced and healthier diet – you can do it! Do some planning ahead of time and follow these tips to make it easier. You’ll love how you feel when you do!

How to Bring More Gratitude to Your Life

Do you struggle to find things to be grateful for each day? It’s not uncommon. Some days are definitely easier than others, but the truth is that there are countless things to be grateful for. You can’t let the negative things (like a demanding boss or whiny kids) detract from your personal happiness. Instead, make 2022 the year you bring more gratitude to your life.

  • Teach yourself to be grateful even when things don’t go your way: Be thankful that you have the ability and opportunity to learn from a difficult experience because it is these experiences that will make you a better person. For example, if you fail an exam or lose your job, remind yourself of all the other exams and jobs available out there. One failed experience is not the end of the world.
  • Don’t settle for anything less than what makes you happy: Surround yourself with people who make you happy. When you surround yourself with like-minded people – happy and grateful – you are more likely to feel those things as well. If someone isn’t treating you right, perhaps it’s time to cut ties and move on.
  • Make the choice to live a happier life every day of the week: There are so many little things you can do each day to feel better about yourself and your life. For example, you could get up an hour earlier than usual to meditate or read a book, take some time out of your schedule at work or school just to relax, eat healthier by cutting down on fast food, walk more instead of driving everywhere…the list goes on!
  • Be thankful when others help you and you help others: The act of giving and receiving help can definitely make you feel grateful. So the next time your mom asks you to help her with groceries or when your friend offers to pick up something from the store on their way over – be thankful and don’t brush them off. It will be good for both of you!
  • Teach yourself what gratefulness is by paying attention to how happy different things make you feel: Are you happier after spending an hour at work getting stuff done? Or are you more satisfied when eating some extra chocolate during break time? These little activities can show you so much about yourself if you take notice. It doesn’t have to be anything big either; just having good conversations with friends and family can make you happier than you think.
  • Make a list of things that make you grateful every day: Even if they’re as simple as taking the time out for yourself each morning before work/school to make sure everyone in your house has something healthy to eat or even just smiling at someone who looks like they need it – these little actions really add up! It’s also okay to put down big events too – such as a promotion or vacation. Writing down the things you are grateful for is a special way of calling attention to them so you won’t forget about the good in your life.
  • Remember how good it feels to be grateful: Even if you don’t feel it today, look back at times in the past that made you happy and remember how good it felt. (This is why writing things down can come in handy!)

If you’re looking to live a more grateful life, remember that it doesn’t have to take up loads of your time and energy. It’s the little things you do and say each day that bring more gratitude – to you and to others.

What Is Modern Farmhouse Style?

Farmhouse style is a design trend that has been around for many years. Farmhouses are typically designed with rustic, country decor in mind. Recently, this design aesthetic has evolved to become more modern and sophisticated – the key elements of modern farmhouse style. Modern farmhouse decor includes clean lines, natural wood finishes, and an earthy color palette. Let’s look at this style, as well as its key features!

  • Modern Farmhouse Style Is All About Simplicity: While traditional country décor is known for its elaborate patterns and designs, modern farmhouse style keeps things simple. The focus of this design aesthetic is on clean lines with an emphasis on natural elements such as wood and stone. This look can be achieved by using furniture made from reclaimed materials or pieces with rustic finishes like weathered gray veneers.
  • Modern Farmhouses Are Filled With Natural Light: One of the key elements of modern farmhouse decor is natural light. Large windows allow sunlight to enter a space, making it feel warm and inviting. You can also make a space seem brighter by using lighter colors on walls or adding white trim.
  • Modern Farmhouses Use Natural Colors & Textures: When it comes to farmhouse-style decorating, the main things you’ll want to focus on are natural colors and textures. Try using light neutral tones – instead of dark or bold colors – as these will help a space feel airy and open rather than heavy or closed in. These lighter shades can be paired with darker accent pieces for contrast.
    • Another element of modern farmhouse style is the use of natural materials and textures. Natural woods like weathered gray ash veneer, repurposed metal finishes, rustic stone, and raw textiles are all common elements in this design aesthetic.
  • Modern Farmhouse Style Is All About The Mix: One of the most crucial elements of modern farmhouse style is its ability to mix and match a variety of different finishes, styles, textures…even color schemes. This look can be achieved by pairing rustic materials with modern furnishings or going for contrasting dark and light. A popular example of this blend in action would be mixing hardwood floors with furniture upholstered in textured fabrics like linen, velvet, or suede.

Of course, if you’re wondering how to bring the modern farmhouse style to your apartment, here are a few ways to do just that:

  • Focus on your color palette by going for neutrals with the occasional contrasting piece. Think about white, beige, blush pink, ivory, gray, sage green, pale blue, or butter yellow.
  • Take a look at your furniture. Most modern farmhouse furniture is clean and simple – not ornate. Look for understated pieces – and don’t go for “matchy-matchy.” Mixing and matching are perfectly acceptable with this design style. (And shopping at thrift stores and consignment shops is a great place to look for pieces and not break the budget.)
  • Choose fabrics wisely by looking for natural fabrics. Cottons and linens are great choices, as is leather.
  • Incorporate reclaimed wood where possible. A coffee table, end tables, or bookcase are perfect for this.
  • Let in as much natural light as possible. Open those shades and remove heavy curtains that could be blocking sunlight from entering your apartment.
  • Use your decorations to bring it all together. Plants, candles, throw rugs, pillows, and blankets all play an important role in the final design of your space.

If you love modern farmhouse style, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to own a farm to bring this design style to your home. There are lots of different ways to bring the various elements to your apartment – and you’re going to love it.

  • Use a humidifier: Humidifiers will help to keep the air in your home moist and hydrating.
  • Lower the thermostat temperature: The dry air from your heating system can also lead to chapped and flaky skin. Lowering the temperature of your home’s thermostat can help prevent this, as it will help your home retain more moisture.
  • Take short showers: Don’t stay in the shower too long! While a nice hot bath may feel good on your winter skin, it will actually dry out and damage your face even more. Keep showers short and sweet by using warm water instead of hot water. This way, you won’t risk irritating or drying out your skin.
  • Use cleansers that are gentle on your skin: Using gentle skin cleansers will help to ensure that you don’t irritate your skin. While most skincare products today are made with all-natural ingredients, many still contain harsh chemicals and fragrances, which can be irritating or damaging for those who have sensitive skin.
  • Apply moisturizer twice daily: Using a moisturizer on your face daily will help to keep it hydrated and healthy. Be sure to apply the moisturizer after you cleanse and tone, but before applying any makeup or facial products, as some ingredients can cause your pores to clog if used over them.
  • Use lip balm regularly: Lips can lose moisture and chap easily during the winter months. Be sure to apply a moisturizing lip balm throughout the day, especially after you eat or drink something so that your lips don’t dry out even more. And look for a lip balm with sunscreen, too! It will help to protect your lips from UV rays.
  • Use sunscreen daily: Sunscreen is not only important for protecting your skin from sun damage, but it also helps protect your face from windburn, which can be common in colder weather. In order to get the best type of protection from sunscreen, look for one with an SPF 30 rating, as this will help prevent photoaging, wrinkles, and age spots.
  • Drink water: Drinking water is essential for your skin as well as the rest of your body. It will not only help to hydrate and moisturize your skin, but it can also prevent dry mouth, which may lead to a sore throat or other problems.
  • Get plenty of sleep: Getting enough sleep daily is vital for healthy-looking skin. Aim for eight hours of sleep to help reduce puffiness.
  • Don’t forget to moisturize your hands: It’s important that you also moisturize your hands during the winter – especially if you’re not a fan of gloves or mittens. They can quickly become chapped when the temperatures fall.
  • Eat foods high in healthy fats and Omega-3 fatty acids: Healthy sources of fat can help your skin stay hydrated during the winter months better than other food –  like processed or junk food that may lead to dryness and irritation around facial features. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, trout, tuna, mackerel, and halibut, which can improve the health of your skin cells.
  • Seek professional help if necessary: If your skin is still dry, flaky, or itchy after following these winter skincare tips, be sure to go see a dermatologist for their professional opinion. They may recommend specific products that can help you.

Don’t let the winter months wreak havoc on your skin. Use these tips to keep it healthy and happy – even when it’s cold and miserable outside.
